The Meghalaya state cabinet has approved changes to three existing university statutes and cleared two fresh university bills for legislative consideration.
The cabinet convened in Shillong and gave its nod to amendments of three university acts that govern higher‑education institutions across Meghalaya.
The approved changes aim to update governance structures, streamline administrative procedures and align academic standards with contemporary needs.
In addition, two new university bills were introduced, seeking to establish fresh institutions and expand the state's capacity for professional and research education.
Both the amendments and the new bills will now be forwarded to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly for debate and formal passage.
Education officials and university representatives have welcomed the move, noting that it could strengthen the state's academic ecosystem and attract more students from the region.
