Meghalaya and Assam have agreed to establish a dedicated border hotline and a joint coordination mechanism to manage incidents following recent violence in Shillong.
The governments of Meghalaya and Assam announced on Monday a new cooperative framework aimed at preventing future clashes along their shared border. The plan includes a 24‑hour hotline that will connect border officials from both states, allowing rapid communication in case of disputes or emergencies.
The agreement also creates a joint mechanism comprising senior officials from the Home Departments of both states. This body will meet regularly to review border incidents, share intelligence and coordinate law‑enforcement actions.
The initiative comes in the wake of violent unrest in Shillong that raised concerns about cross‑border tensions. Officials said the hotline and joint mechanism are intended to build trust, improve response times and ensure public safety in the border districts.
Both state governments have pledged to allocate necessary resources and to inform local police forces about the new protocols within the next two weeks.
