A dispute between taxi operators from Meghalaya and Assam has continued, causing several tourists to be stuck without transport, reports NDTV.

A prolonged standoff between taxi operators from the neighbouring states of Meghalaya and Assam has escalated, leaving a number of tourists stranded at the border area. The disagreement, which began over route allocations and fare structures, has prevented the usual flow of shared taxis that ferry visitors between popular hill destinations.

Travel agencies and local authorities have reported that the impasse is affecting holidaymakers heading to Shillong, Cherrapunji and nearby attractions in Meghalaya, as well as those returning to Assam. Tourists have been forced to seek alternative, often more expensive, transport options or to remain idle while the dispute remains unresolved.

Officials from both state transport departments said they are in talks with the operators to reach a settlement, but no concrete timeline has been provided. Meanwhile, the NDTV team on the ground observed queues of buses and private cars attempting to fill the gap left by the halted taxi services.

The standoff underscores the fragility of inter‑state transport arrangements in the region, where tourism forms a vital part of the local economy. Stakeholders have urged a swift resolution to restore normal travel flow and prevent further inconvenience to visitors.
