Man‑pulled rickshaws, once a common sight on Ranchi’s streets, are now disappearing rapidly.

Local observers note that the number of manually operated rickshaws in Ranchi has dropped sharply in recent years, with only a handful remaining on the city’s busy thoroughfares.
These rickshaws, traditionally powered by a driver walking behind the carriage, were once a staple of short‑distance transport for many residents, especially in market areas and narrow lanes.
The decline is attributed to the growing preference for motorised alternatives such as auto‑rickshaws and e‑vehicles, as well as changing regulations that favour mechanised transport, leading to the gradual phasing out of the human‑powered version.
Transport experts warn that the loss of man‑pulled rickshaws also erodes a small but visible part of the city’s cultural heritage, prompting calls for documentation before the practice disappears completely.
