Pathankot officials have suggested naming a road or square after Romanch Mahajan, an 18‑year‑old who died in a horse‑carriage accident in New York, following the city’s enactment of ‘Romanch’s Law’ banning horse‑drawn carriages from June 2028.
Punjab minister Lal Chand Kataruchak and former Pathankot mayor Panna Lal Bhatia have jointly proposed that a road or public square in Pathankot be named after Romanch Mahajan, an 18‑year‑old who lost his life in a horse‑carriage accident in New York in June.
The tragedy prompted the New York City Council to pass “Romanch’s Law,” which will prohibit the use of horse‑drawn carriages from June 2028. The law was named in honor of the young victim.
Kataruchak said he would present the proposal to the state cabinet for approval, while Bhatia highlighted the symbolic gesture of connecting a local tribute to an international legislative response.
If adopted, the naming would serve as a reminder of the incident’s impact and underscore Pathankot’s willingness to honor citizens whose lives have resonated beyond national borders.
