The traditional folk instrument Mandar from Jharkhand has been awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognizing its unique cultural heritage and ensuring protection for its makers.
The Geographical Indication tag was granted by the Government of India under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The Mandar, a percussion instrument traditionally crafted from bamboo, is widely used in folk music across Jharkhand.
The registration will help artisans protect their craft from imitation and increase the instrument’s market value, while highlighting the unique characteristics tied to the region.
The decision was announced by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry with support from the Jharkhand State Handicrafts Development Corporation. Local musicians and instrument makers welcomed the recognition.
The GI tag is expected to promote tourism and preserve Jharkhand’s cultural identity, encouraging younger generations to learn the art of making and playing the Mandar.
