The Maharashtra government has announced a scheme that will ensure retired police dogs receive lifetime care and remain with their former handlers.

The state cabinet approved a new policy that guarantees lifetime support for police dogs after they retire from service. Under the scheme, the animals will continue to live with the officers who trained and worked with them, ensuring continuity of care and companionship.

Officials said the move addresses the welfare concerns raised by animal‑rights groups and acknowledges the dogs' contributions to law‑enforcement operations across Maharashtra. Funding will be allocated from the police department's budget, covering veterinary services, nutrition and shelter maintenance.

The policy also outlines a formal handover process, requiring handlers to submit retirement documentation for each dog. Once approved, the handler assumes responsibility for the dog's day‑to‑day needs while receiving periodic health check‑ups funded by the state.

The announcement was made during a press conference in Mumbai, where the chief minister highlighted the initiative as part of broader animal‑welfare reforms.

Animal‑care NGOs welcomed the decision, calling it a progressive step that sets a precedent for other states to follow.
