The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has ordered dairy operators to stop discharging waste into Budha Dariya, citing severe water contamination.
Ludhiana’s municipal corporation announced a crackdown on waste dumping into Budha Dariya, a small river that runs through the city, after recent tests revealed alarming levels of pollutants. The corporation’s environmental wing issued a formal notice to all dairy processing units in the vicinity, directing them to cease any effluent discharge into the waterway immediately.
Officials said that untreated milk waste and related by‑products have been identified as major contributors to the river’s deteriorating quality, threatening both public health and local agriculture. The corporation warned that non‑compliance could attract hefty fines and possible suspension of operating licences.
The move follows a series of complaints from residents and environmental groups who have observed foul odours and discoloration in the river over the past months. The municipal body has pledged to conduct regular monitoring and to provide guidance on proper waste‑water treatment to the affected dairy operators.
If dairy units adhere to the directive, the corporation will consider a phased relaxation of the restrictions, but it emphasized that the primary goal remains the restoration of Budha Dariya’s ecological balance.
