Community activist Hima Jirang has urged authorities to suspend the ongoing bridge construction at Umshru, citing environmental and displacement concerns.

Hima Jirang, a local activist from the Umshru area in Assam, publicly demanded that the state government halt the bridge construction currently underway at the site. The demand was voiced during a gathering of residents who have been monitoring the project’s progress.

Jirang highlighted that the ongoing work threatens the fragile riverine ecosystem and could displace families living nearby. She urged officials to conduct a thorough impact assessment before any further work proceeds, emphasizing the need to protect both the environment and the livelihoods of local communities.

As of now, the district administration has not issued an official response to the demand. Authorities are expected to review the concerns raised and decide whether to pause the construction pending a detailed study.

The bridge, part of a broader effort to improve connectivity in the region, has drawn mixed reactions. While some view it as essential for economic development, others, led by Jirang, caution that inadequate planning could cause irreversible damage.

Stakeholders are awaiting clarification from the state’s public works department, which is slated to meet with community representatives later this week to discuss possible mitigation measures.
