Landslide Blocks Teesta and Chiyabong Rivers in North Sikkim, Alert Issued

A massive landslide struck the North Sikkim district, causing a blockage in two major rivers – the Teesta and the Chiyabong. The debris has created a natural dam, raising concerns about rising water levels upstream and potential flooding. Local disaster management teams have been mobilised to assess the situation and to monitor water flow. An official alert has been issued, advising residents in nearby villages to stay vigilant and be prepared for possible evacuation. Authorities are also coordinating with the Indian Meteorological Department to track any further developments.

The Teesta River, a vital waterway for the region’s agriculture and hydro‑electric projects, now faces a temporary disruption. Engineers are evaluating options to safely remove the blockage without causing downstream damage. Meanwhile, the Chiyabong, a smaller tributary, adds to the complexity of the emergency response due to its steep terrain.
