The new BJP administration in West Bengal marked its first Durga Puja by painting Kolkata’s roads in bright red, pink, yellow and orange.
During the opening days of the Durga Puja festivities, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, acting on instructions from the state BJP government, painted several major roads in four vivid shades – red, pink, yellow and orange. The colour scheme was applied to arterial routes such as B.B.D. Bagh, Esplanade and the Maidan area, creating a striking visual backdrop for the religious celebrations.
Officials said the initiative was intended to give the city a fresh, festive look and to signal the new administration's commitment to supporting cultural events. The choice of colours aligns with traditional puja motifs while also reflecting the party’s branding.
Residents and visitors noted the bright palette as a welcome change, with many sharing photographs on social media. While some praised the effort as a boost to the city’s ambience, others observed that the decorations are temporary and will be removed after the puja concludes.
The project marks the first time a BJP‑led state government has undertaken a city‑wide road‑colouring scheme specifically for Durga Puja, highlighting the political significance attached to the festival in West Bengal.
