Activist Kishor Barman has appealed to the West Bengal government to reinstate special higher‑education opportunities that were recently withdrawn.
Kishor Barman, a local education activist, has formally requested the West Bengal state government to restore special higher‑education opportunities that were discontinued earlier this year. He argues that the removal of these seats has disadvantaged students from marginalized sections who relied on the scheme for access to professional courses.
The special provisions, introduced to increase representation of under‑served communities in universities and colleges, were suspended amid a broader policy review. Barman says the abrupt change has left many aspirants without viable pathways to pursue advanced studies.
In his appeal, Barman urged the education department to reconsider the decision and reinstate the seats before the upcoming admission cycle. He also called for a transparent review process involving stakeholders from the affected groups.
As of now, the state government has not issued an official response to the demand, and the issue remains under discussion among policymakers and civil society groups.
