Samples of petrol collected in Karnataka revealed up to 31.2% ethanol content, far above the permissible limit, officials said.

A recent test of petrol samples from Karnataka has shown that the fuel contains up to 31.2% ethanol, a figure that is well above the 10% maximum allowed by the Central Pollution Control Board. The finding was announced by a senior official, Rizwan Arshad, who highlighted the seriousness of the over‑blending issue.

The Central Pollution Control Board has set strict limits on the addition of ethanol to petrol to protect vehicle engines and ensure fuel quality. Exceeding these limits can lead to engine damage and increased emissions.

Consumers in the state are warned that using petrol with such high ethanol content could reduce fuel efficiency and potentially cause mechanical problems in their vehicles. The state government has urged petrol stations to conduct immediate quality checks.

Authorities are planning a comprehensive audit of fuel stations across Karnataka and will impose penalties on outlets found violating the blending norms. The government also intends to launch a public awareness campaign on the risks of adulterated fuel.
