Karnataka CM DK Shivakumar Urges PM Modi to Act on Looming Drought

Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging immediate measures to address the state’s escalating drought crisis.

Karnataka is currently grappling with a severe water crisis, with several districts reporting low rainfall and depleted reservoirs. The state’s agricultural sector, which employs a large portion of the population, is under pressure as crop yields are threatened.

In a formal letter dated today, Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar addressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the urgency of the drought situation and requesting central assistance. The letter outlines specific areas where federal support is needed, including irrigation projects, water conservation measures, and financial aid for farmers.

The Karnataka government has already initiated emergency measures such as water rationing and the deployment of mobile irrigation units. However, the CM emphasized that these steps are insufficient without additional resources from the central government.

The letter is expected to prompt a response from the Prime Minister’s office, potentially leading to a coordinated relief plan that could involve the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Agriculture. The state remains hopeful that timely intervention will mitigate the impact on its agrarian economy.
