The Karnataka government has approved the use of the honorific 'Tr' before teachers' names, aiming to acknowledge their professional status.
The state government of Karnataka issued a circular permitting educators to place the prefix "Tr" before their names. The directive, announced by the education department, formalises the use of the title as a mark of respect for teachers across the state.
Officials said the measure is intended to elevate the social standing of teachers and recognise their contribution to society. By allowing the honorific in official communications, name‑plates and other professional contexts, the government hopes to reinforce the dignity of the teaching profession.
The policy applies to teachers in both government and privately‑run schools within Karnataka, who may now adopt the "Tr" prefix in all formal and public representations of their name.
