India's MEA urges UN to show J&K, Ladakh as per official map

New Delhi – The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has formally responded to a United Nations resolution urging member states to "correct the map" of the region, insisting that any depiction of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh at the UN must match India's official cartographic representation. In a statement released on Wednesday, the MEA said the resolution overlooks the sovereign status of the two territories and could undermine India's territorial integrity.

The UN resolution, tabled by a group of countries, called for the removal of disputed borders from international maps. India, through its foreign ministry, reiterated that the country's constitution and legal framework define the boundaries of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and that these must be respected in all official documents and forums.

MEA spokesperson clarified that India will continue to engage diplomatically with the UN to ensure that its official map is used in all future UN publications and proceedings. The ministry also warned that any deviation could be viewed as a breach of international norms concerning sovereign territories.

The statement comes amid heightened sensitivities over cartographic representations in global forums, with several nations previously challenging India's claims. The MEA's firm stance underscores Delhi's resolve to protect its territorial claims on the world stage.
