Indian Govt Debunks Viral AI Deepfakes of PM and Ministers, Links to Pakistani Accounts

The Indian government has debunked a series of AI-generated videos that falsely portrayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other ministers, attributing the source to Pakistani social media accounts.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting released a statement today confirming that a set of AI‑generated videos circulating on social media were fabricated. The clips, which showed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several cabinet ministers speaking on controversial topics, were identified as deepfakes.

The fact‑checking team traced the origin of the videos to several Pakistani social media handles that had been active in spreading misinformation. The government urged users to verify sources before sharing content.

Officials said the deepfakes were created using advanced generative AI techniques that can replicate a person’s voice and facial expressions with high accuracy. They warned that such technology could be used to influence public opinion.

The government has pledged to strengthen digital literacy initiatives and collaborate with tech firms to detect and remove false content promptly.
