Bimal N Patel, a seasoned Indian diplomat, has been elected to serve as a judge on the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), a key judicial body overseeing maritime disputes.

The election took place during the ITLOS General Assembly held in Geneva, where Patel was chosen alongside judges from other nations, reflecting India's growing influence in international maritime law.

In a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar extended his congratulations to Patel, noting his experience in maritime negotiations and his contributions to India's diplomatic efforts.

Patel’s appointment is expected to strengthen India's voice in shaping global maritime jurisprudence, and he is slated to serve a term of five years, beginning in 2025.
