India and China have reopened commercial trade at the Nathula border in Sikkim after a six‑year suspension that began in 2015 amid heightened tensions on the Sino‑Indian frontier.
The first trading session took place on 27 March 2024, with 38 traders from both sides exchanging goods at the designated trading post.
Officials said the reopening is a step toward normalising economic ties and could pave the way for increased trade volumes in the future, especially in sectors such as agriculture, handicrafts and textiles.
Both governments highlighted the importance of maintaining stable cross‑border commerce and pledged to work on further easing of procedures for traders.
