India has officially renamed 27 places in Arunachal Pradesh, a move that has drawn a sharp reaction from Beijing, which disputes the region’s sovereignty.

India’s Ministry of Home Affairs announced the official naming of 27 localities in Arunachal Pradesh, a state that China claims as part of its territory. The names, which include villages, rivers and hills, were added to the national map and published in the government’s Gazette. The move is seen by New Delhi as a reaffirmation of its administrative control over the region.

China’s foreign ministry issued a statement condemning the action, calling it a unilateral step that violates the spirit of bilateral talks. Beijing reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of China and that any changes to the map without mutual agreement are unacceptable.

The naming exercise follows a series of administrative updates by India aimed at strengthening governance in border areas. Officials say the changes are purely administrative and do not alter any existing borders. However, the gesture has heightened tensions in the long‑standing India‑China border dispute.

Diplomatic channels remain open, with both sides warning against any escalation. Analysts suggest that the incident could prompt further diplomatic exchanges as each country seeks to assert its position on the contested frontier.
