Revenue and Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi flagged off 16 traders on August 1, marking the resumption of trade through the Shipli La pass to Shipki village in Tibet.
On August 1, Revenue and Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi inaugurated the reopening of the Shipli La trade corridor, a route that had been closed for six years. The ceremony saw 16 traders set off from the Indian side, carrying goods destined for Shipki village in Tibet.
During the flag‑off, Negi presented traditional Khataks—ceremonial scarves—alongside the traders’ horses, a symbolic gesture of goodwill and cultural exchange between the two nations.
The resumption of the pass is expected to boost local economies on both sides of the border, providing a new avenue for the exchange of agricultural produce, handicrafts and other goods. Traders anticipate quicker transit times and reduced costs compared to alternative routes.
Officials have indicated that the government will monitor the corridor closely to ensure smooth operations and to address any logistical challenges that may arise as trade volumes increase.
