A protest demanding the National Register of Citizens in Imphal has disrupted routine services across the city.
Earlier this week, residents of Imphal, the capital of Manipur, began a citywide strike to press for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The demonstration quickly spread to major thoroughfares, with demonstrators blocking roads and staging sit‑ins outside government offices.
The shutdown has brought public transport to a halt, closed schools and colleges, and forced many shops and market stalls to remain shut. Commuters reported being stranded, and essential services such as electricity maintenance and waste collection have been delayed.
Local authorities have appealed for calm, warning that an extended disruption could strain law and order. Protest leaders, however, said the strike will continue until their demands regarding the NRC are addressed.
The NRC, a contentious citizenship verification scheme, has ignited protests across several northeastern states, and the Imphal strike reflects the broader regional unease over its implementation.
