A new Observer Research Foundation study shows that household investment is a major source of capital for India's informal, unincorporated sector.
The Observer Research Foundation (ORF) has released a detailed analysis titled "What Household Investment Reveals About India’s Unincorporated Economy." The paper examines how savings and investments made by Indian households are channelled into informal, unincorporated enterprises that operate outside the corporate framework.
According to the study, a substantial portion of household capital is directed toward small‑scale businesses, family‑run shops and other informal ventures. This financing pattern underscores the pivotal role that private household savings play in sustaining a sector that is often omitted from official economic statistics.
The report cautions that the reliance on household funds highlights gaps in formal credit access for informal operators. It recommends that policymakers improve financial inclusion mechanisms, enhance data collection on the unincorporated sector, and consider targeted support to bridge the financing shortfall.
By shedding light on the hidden flow of capital from homes to informal enterprises, the ORF analysis adds a new dimension to the understanding of India's broader economic landscape and the importance of the unincorporated economy in job creation and livelihood generation.
