Himachal Pradesh to Add 1,000 Electric Buses and 250 Diesel Buses to State Fleet

The Himachal Pradesh government announced a plan to procure 1,000 electric buses and an additional 250 diesel buses to modernise its public transport fleet.
The transport department of Himachal Pradesh disclosed a major fleet‑upgrade programme that will see 1,000 electric buses added to the state’s public‑service fleet, alongside a further order of 250 diesel‑powered buses. The move is aimed at expanding coverage in hilly regions while cutting emissions.
The procurement is expected to be rolled out over the next two years, with funding sourced from the state budget and central government subsidies for electric vehicles. Officials said they are in talks with multiple manufacturers to secure competitive pricing and local assembly where possible.
If implemented as planned, the new buses could replace ageing units, improve reliability for commuters and support the state’s climate targets. The project is also likely to generate jobs in vehicle maintenance and charging‑infrastructure development across Himachal Pradesh.
