The Himachal Pradesh minister called for a dedicated India‑China communication line and instant alerts for disasters originating in Tibet, citing regional safety concerns.
New Delhi – In a recent statement, the minister of Himachal Pradesh urged the central government to establish a direct India‑China hotline to facilitate swift diplomatic exchanges during emergencies. The call comes amid heightened awareness of natural calamities that can originate in the Tibetan plateau and quickly affect downstream Indian states.
The minister highlighted that real‑time alerts on earthquakes, floods or landslides in Tibet would enable state and central agencies to mobilise resources promptly, potentially saving lives and reducing economic loss. He emphasized that a dedicated communication channel would also help de‑escalate any cross‑border misunderstandings that may arise during such events.
While the proposal is yet to be formally discussed at the national level, officials in the Ministry of External Affairs have acknowledged the merit of the suggestion and indicated that a feasibility study is underway. The minister pledged to continue lobbying for the hotline and for a coordinated disaster‑response framework with neighboring countries.
