Heavy rains threaten Nepal with mudslides a month after floods

The Nepalese government warned that upcoming heavy rainfall could trigger mudslides, intensifying the humanitarian strain following last month’s catastrophic floods.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued an alert that the western and central regions of Nepal will receive intense rain over the next few days, raising the risk of landslides in hilly terrain.
Last month’s monsoon floods swept through more than 30 districts, killing dozens, displacing thousands and destroying homes, roads and bridges.
In response, local authorities have begun pre‑emptive evacuations in vulnerable villages, set up temporary shelters, and deployed rescue teams to monitor river levels.
Officials have appealed for additional relief supplies and have urged communities to stay alert, follow early‑warning messages and avoid low‑lying areas prone to sudden mudslides.
