Heavy monsoon rains have triggered flooding in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, prompting authorities to shift 525 people to safety, while nearby Chhattisgarh also experienced severe downpours.
Heavy monsoon showers over the past 24 hours have caused water levels in several rivers and streams across Gadchiroli district to rise sharply, resulting in flash floods that inundated low‑lying villages. District officials confirmed that 525 residents were moved to relief shelters as a precautionary measure.
The district administration, supported by the state disaster management force and local police, has deployed rescue boats and emergency teams to assist stranded families and to distribute dry rations, drinking water and medical kits. Temporary shelters have been set up in schools and community halls, with power and communication lines being restored where possible.
Meteorological departments noted that the same weather system is affecting the adjoining state of Chhattisgarh, where heavy rainfalls have also been reported. Officials warned that further downpours could aggravate the situation, urging residents in flood‑prone areas to stay alert and follow evacuation instructions.
