Intense monsoon rains triggered landslides that have closed the key Siliguri‑Gangtok corridor, disrupting transport between West Bengal and Sikkim.

Heavy monsoon rains in the western hills triggered multiple landslides that have closed the Siliguri‑Gangtok corridor, a vital link between West Bengal and Sikkim. The highway, part of National Highway 27, is now blocked by debris and fallen trees, preventing vehicular movement in both directions.

The closure has disrupted daily commutes, freight transport and tourism traffic, with several buses and trucks stranded on either side of the break. Local residents report that the road has been impassable for the past 48 hours.

Sikkim and West Bengal authorities have dispatched road‑repair crews and emergency teams to clear the debris. Traffic advisories urge commuters to seek alternate routes via the Kalimpong or Rangpo corridors.

Officials say that weather conditions remain unpredictable and that the road may stay closed until the monsoon subsides, with a tentative reopening date pending after a full survey of the damaged sections.
