The Gujarat state government has prolonged its prohibition on the sale of gutkha and paan masala, now effective through September 2027.

Gujarat's health department announced that the existing prohibition on the sale of gutkha and paan masala will remain in force until September 2027, extending the earlier ban by several years. The decision was communicated through an official circular and will be implemented across all districts of the state.

The extension reflects the government's ongoing effort to curb tobacco‑related health risks, particularly oral cancers and other chronic diseases linked to these products. Health officials have repeatedly highlighted the high addiction potential of gutkha and paan masala, especially among youth.

Authorities have reiterated that violations will attract strict penalties, including fines and possible confiscation of stock. Enforcement teams are instructed to conduct regular market inspections and to monitor online sales platforms.

While the move has been welcomed by public‑health advocates, some small retailers have expressed concerns over the economic impact. The state government has indicated that it will explore alternative livelihood support for affected vendors.
