The state government of Goa has unveiled a new policy aimed at collecting and processing used cooking oil for biodiesel production, aiming to boost renewable energy and reduce waste.
Goa’s government has rolled out a comprehensive policy to gather used cooking oil from households and restaurants for conversion into biodiesel. The initiative, announced by the state’s Ministry of Energy, will establish collection points across major towns and offer incentives to local businesses that supply oil to the program.
The policy’s primary goal is to reduce the environmental impact of discarded cooking oil while creating a domestic source of renewable fuel. By diverting waste oil from landfills and open drains, Goa aims to cut greenhouse‑gas emissions and support the state’s broader sustainability targets.
Implementation will involve partnerships with private sector processors who will receive the collected oil, convert it into biodiesel, and supply it to the state’s fuel distribution network. The government will also provide subsidies and tax benefits to encourage participation from small and medium enterprises.
Officials estimate that the program could collect up to 30,000 liters of used oil annually, enough to produce roughly 20,000 liters of biodiesel. The move is expected to create jobs in collection, processing and distribution, while positioning Goa as a leader in green energy initiatives.
