Gangtok, Sept 12 (Sikkimexpress) – The Commission on Glacial Hazards, set up by the Sikkim government to study the impact of melting glaciers, formally submitted its comprehensive report to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang today. The document details the current state of glaciers in the Eastern Himalayas, identifies zones vulnerable to glacial lake outburst floods, and proposes mitigation measures such as early‑warning systems and community‑level preparedness.
The commission, comprising glaciologists, geologists and disaster‑management experts, spent the past year conducting field surveys across the state’s high‑altitude valleys. Its findings indicate an accelerated rate of glacial retreat, raising concerns for downstream settlements and critical infrastructure.
In a brief meeting, the CM acknowledged the urgency of the recommendations and directed relevant departments to prioritize the implementation of safety protocols before the monsoon season. The report is expected to guide future policy on climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction in Sikkim.
