Four people were killed by toxic gas at Shri Ganga Restaurant in Ujjain when three workers entered a chamber to rescue a colleague who was inspecting a food‑waste tank.
A tragic accident unfolded at Shri Ganga Restaurant in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, when four individuals succumbed to toxic gas inside a food‑waste tank chamber. The incident began when a restaurant employee descended into the chamber to inspect the waste tank.
When the employee failed to emerge, three other workers entered the same confined space in an attempt to pull him out. All four were exposed to the poisonous fumes and died on the spot.
Rescue teams reported that the chamber's gate became jammed, forcing the workers to cut through it in a desperate effort to escape, but the gas had already taken its toll. Local police, fire services and medical personnel arrived promptly, securing the site and beginning an investigation into safety lapses.
Authorities have launched a probe to determine the source of the gas and to assess compliance with occupational safety regulations at the establishment. The incident has raised concerns about hazardous material handling in small‑scale food outlets across the region.
