Mukul Sangma, former chief minister of Meghalaya, raised the concerns of landowners affected by the state’s border fencing and asked the Union government to step in.

Mukul Sangma, who served as Meghalaya's chief minister until 2023, highlighted the hardships faced by landowners as the state proceeds with a border‑fencing project. He said the fencing, aimed at demarcating Meghalaya's boundaries with neighboring states, is cutting through privately owned plots, leaving many families without clear title or compensation.

Sangma warned that the lack of a transparent mechanism is creating legal uncertainty and threatening the livelihoods of those whose agricultural land is being seized. He urged the Union government to intervene promptly, conduct a fair assessment and ensure that affected owners receive appropriate redress.

The former chief minister called for a coordinated review between state and central authorities, emphasizing that a swift resolution is essential to prevent further distress among the local farming community.

He also appealed for the Centre to consider a compensation framework that reflects the actual loss of land and income, and to facilitate dialogue with the owners to reach an amicable settlement.
