The ex‑chief of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India said that mandatory front‑of‑pack warnings should compel manufacturers to reformulate processed foods.
The former head of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) emphasized that warning labels on packaged foods must go beyond informing consumers and actually drive manufacturers to change their formulations.
He pointed out that front‑of‑pack warnings indicating high levels of salt, sugar or trans‑fat should serve as a catalyst for product reformulation, reducing these harmful ingredients in the supply chain.
The ex‑chief called on both industry players and regulators to ensure that the introduction of such warnings translates into concrete alterations in food composition, aiming to improve public health outcomes across the country.
