Floodwaters recede in Nalanda but villages still cut off as river diversions remain inactive

Despite the drop in river levels in Nalanda district, many villages remain isolated because the Sakri and Muhane diversion works are still pending, forcing residents to take long detours or use makeshift pole bridges.
The water levels of the Sakri and Muhane rivers in Bihar's Nalanda district have fallen, signalling the end of the worst of the recent floods. However, the receding water has not translated into normalcy for residents of flood‑hit villages.
Authorities have yet to activate the diversion structures on both rivers, a delay that continues to sever road links to several hamlets in Nalanda and the neighboring Shekhpura district. Without the diversions, many villages remain surrounded by waterlogged fields and damaged embankments.
Local commuters report having to travel up to 40 kilometres out of the way to reach the nearest functional road, while others have resorted to crossing the swollen streams on improvised pole bridges erected by community members. These temporary measures underscore the ongoing hardship despite the visible drop in floodwater.
Officials from the district disaster management team said work on the diversions is underway but have not provided a definitive timeline for completion. In the meantime, relief agencies continue to distribute food and medical supplies to the isolated settlements.
