The Meghalaya government has released the first tranche of the Umbrella ST Scholarship, benefitting over 96,000 eligible students.

The state government of Meghalaya has transferred the initial installment of the Umbrella ST Scholarship to more than 96,000 students belonging to Scheduled Tribes. The disbursement, announced by the education department, marks the first payment under the scheme, which aims to reduce financial barriers to higher education for tribal youth.

The scholarship is scheduled to be paid in multiple installments throughout the academic year, with eligibility criteria based on income, academic performance and tribal status. Officials said the funds will be credited directly to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries to ensure timely support.

The rollout follows the government's broader effort to improve educational outcomes in the state, particularly among marginalized communities. Stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that reliable financial aid can boost enrolment and retention rates in colleges and universities across Meghalaya.

The education department will continue to monitor the distribution process and plans to release subsequent installments in line with the academic calendar.
