In Umariya, Madhya Pradesh, the excise department raided five illegal distilleries, confiscating 47 litres of homemade liquor and 2,800 kilograms of mahua liquor, following deaths from toxic alcohol.
Following several fatalities caused by toxic liquor in the sea, the Madhya Pradesh excise department intensified its crackdown on illegal distilleries in Umariya. On Thursday, officers conducted raids at five sites, including the Mahroee River area, targeting clandestine production units.
During the operation, authorities seized 47 litres of homemade hand‑baked liquor and 2,800 kilograms of mahua liquor, a local alcoholic beverage. The confiscated stock was found in storage facilities linked to the illegal distilleries.
The excise officials registered four cases against the operators, citing violations of the Excise Act and the Prevention of Illicit Liquor Act. The raid is part of a broader effort to curb the distribution of unregulated alcohol following recent public health concerns.
