An elderly resident of Lakoda in Sidhi district unintentionally drank a toxic rice pesticide thinking it was cough syrup, prompting severe symptoms and referral to Sidhi district hospital.
Lakoda, a village in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh, witnessed a troubling incident on Tuesday when an elderly man consumed a chemical commonly used to protect rice crops, mistaking it for a cough remedy. The substance, intended for agricultural use, is highly toxic if ingested.
Within an hour of ingestion, the victim began experiencing rapid deterioration in health, including foaming from the mouth and difficulty breathing. Bystanders reported that his condition worsened quickly, prompting immediate calls for medical assistance.
Paramedics transported the patient to the nearest primary health centre, where he was stabilised before being referred to Sidhi district hospital for advanced care. Doctors at the hospital confirmed poisoning and initiated appropriate decontamination and supportive treatment.
Health officials have urged residents to store agricultural chemicals securely and to verify medicines before consumption, emphasizing that accidental poisonings can be fatal if not addressed promptly.
