The Election Commission of India has cleared home voting for over 237,000 electors in Kerala, Assam and Puducherry ahead of upcoming polls.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a notification permitting more than 237,000 registered voters to cast their ballots through home voting in the forthcoming elections across Kerala, Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
The scheme targets electors who are unable to reach polling stations because of age, disability, illness or other valid reasons, allowing them to apply for postal or proxy voting under strict supervision.
Under the new provision, ballots will be dispatched to and collected from designated post offices, ensuring that the voting process remains secure while accommodating voters’ special circumstances.
The commission has called on political parties and local authorities to cooperate in facilitating the arrangement, stressing that the move seeks to broaden participation without compromising the integrity of the electoral roll.
This notification arrives ahead of the scheduled state assembly and local body elections, and the ECI will closely monitor the turnout of home voters to assess the effectiveness of the measure.
