The Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya stated that free trade agreements can provide access to international markets for the state’s agricultural producers and business owners.

Meghalaya's Deputy Chief Minister highlighted the potential of free trade agreements (FTAs) to open up export opportunities for the state's agricultural sector and local entrepreneurs. He emphasized that reduced tariffs and streamlined regulations under FTAs could enable Meghalaya's produce, such as spices, fruits, and horticultural goods, to reach buyers abroad more competitively.

The minister noted that many small and marginal farmers lack the market linkages required for international trade, and that government support combined with FTAs could bridge this gap. He called for capacity‑building programs to help producers meet quality standards demanded by overseas markets.

While the statement reflects optimism about upcoming trade negotiations, the deputy also cautioned that effective implementation will depend on infrastructure upgrades, such as cold‑storage facilities and better logistics, to preserve product quality during export.

The remarks were made during a press briefing in Shillong, where state officials are reviewing the impact of national trade policies on regional economies. No specific timelines were given for when Meghalaya's products might start entering new global markets.
