Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein highlighted that the untapped hydropower potential of Arunachal Pradesh could play a pivotal role in India’s shift to clean energy.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein told reporters that Arunachal Pradesh holds significant untapped hydropower resources, which could be harnessed to meet a large share of the nation’s renewable energy targets. He emphasized that the state’s steep river gradients and abundant rainfall make it uniquely suited for large‑scale hydro projects.

The statement comes as India accelerates its clean‑energy roadmap, aiming to increase non‑fossil fuel capacity to 500 gigawatts by 2030. Leveraging Arunachal’s hydro potential could reduce reliance on coal and help achieve emissions‑reduction commitments under the Paris Agreement.

While specific project details were not disclosed, the deputy chief minister urged the central government and private investors to fast‑track clearances and financing mechanisms. He also called for community engagement to ensure that local livelihoods are protected while developing the sector.

Analysts note that unlocking the state’s hydro capacity will require addressing logistical challenges in remote terrain and ensuring environmental safeguards. Nonetheless, officials view the initiative as a cornerstone for the region’s economic development and India’s broader energy security.

The remarks underscore a strategic shift toward leveraging the Himalayan states’ natural endowments to power the country’s green future.
