Delhi will remain a dry city on October 9 and 10 as the Election Commission’s protest against the government’s liquor policy continues, halting alcohol sales across the capital.

The Election Commission of India has called for a two‑day protest in Delhi, leading the state government to declare October 9 and 10 as dry days. All liquor outlets, bars and restaurants that serve alcohol are required to remain closed for the duration of the protest.

Authorities have instructed police to enforce the ban and to monitor any attempts to sell or consume alcohol in public places. Residents have been advised to plan accordingly, especially those who had bookings for celebrations or events that involve alcohol.

The move comes amid a broader dispute between the Election Commission and the central government over recent changes to liquor licensing rules. While the Commission says the protest is to highlight concerns about the impact of the new policy on electoral integrity, the government has urged citizens to respect the temporary restriction.

No further extensions have been announced, and normal liquor sales are expected to resume on October 11, provided the protest concludes as scheduled.
