The Delhi High Court directed the immediate takedown of deepfake videos posted by the Aam Aadmi Party that portrayed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a misleading manner.
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued an order compelling the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to remove several deepfake videos that depicted Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a distorted context. The court described the content as "misleading" and directed the party to delete the material from all digital platforms within 24 hours.
The contested videos, shared under the slogan "Har Har Rekha, Ghar Ghar Theka," featured manipulated footage of the CM allegedly making statements that were never made. AAP had posted the clips on social media as part of a political campaign, prompting complaints from the CM's office.
In its judgment, the bench emphasized that the spread of fabricated audiovisual material undermines public discourse and can influence voter perception. It warned that non‑compliance could attract contempt of court proceedings.
Legal experts noted that the order aligns with recent Indian jurisprudence aimed at curbing the misuse of deepfake technology in elections. The AAP spokesperson said the party would review the court's directive and cooperate with the removal process.
