The Indian National Congress has reduced its tie‑ups with smaller regional parties in Uttar Pradesh, while Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has signalled a strategic distance from the party ahead of the upcoming state elections.

New Delhi – As the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls approach, the Indian National Congress is recalibrating its electoral strategy by scaling back alliances with several minor regional outfits in the state. Party officials say the move aims to present a clearer, more focused campaign narrative and avoid the complexities of managing multiple small partners.

Sources within the Congress leadership confirm that talks with a handful of local parties have been concluded, with the national party opting to contest a larger share of seats independently. The decision reflects concerns that fragmented alliances could dilute the party’s brand and confuse voters.

At the same time, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav has publicly indicated a desire to keep a respectful distance from the Congress ahead of the vote. While he has not ruled out future cooperation, Yadav’s remarks suggest a cautious approach, citing the need to preserve the Samajwadi Party’s distinct identity and voter base.

Political analysts note that the twin developments could reshape the contest in Uttar Pradesh, where both parties are seeking to regain relevance after a series of electoral setbacks. The reduced Congress‑SP synergy may open space for other regional players to influence the outcome.
