The Congress party has announced former hockey fullback Pargat Singh as a candidate in the upcoming Punjab assembly elections, signalling a fresh approach to its campaign.
The Indian National Congress has named former Indian hockey fullback Pargat Singh as a contender for the forthcoming Punjab legislative assembly polls. Singh, who represented India in several international tournaments and captained the national side, is stepping into politics after a distinguished sports career.
Party officials say the decision reflects Congress's intent to broaden its appeal by fielding candidates with strong public recognition beyond traditional political circles. By leveraging Singh's popularity in rural and urban Punjab, the party hopes to attract voters who admire his sporting achievements.
Analysts note that while sports personalities have occasionally entered Indian politics, their electoral success varies. The Congress leadership, however, believes Singh's clean image and grassroots connections could bolster its standing against rival parties in a tightly contested state election.
The move also underscores a strategic shift as Congress seeks fresh faces to rejuvenate its campaign narrative ahead of the polls, which are expected to be fiercely competitive across the state.
