A faculty member from the College of Forestry has been appointed to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s expert panel on bear conservation.
The College of Forestry announced that one of its professors has been selected to serve on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) specialist team focused on bear conservation. The appointment places the academic among a global group of scientists and wildlife experts tasked with guiding research, policy and on‑ground actions to safeguard bear populations worldwide.
The professor, known for research on forest ecosystems and wildlife management, will contribute Indian perspectives to the IUCN panel, which often reviews species status, habitat threats and conservation strategies. Inclusion in the team highlights the growing recognition of Indian expertise in large‑mammal conservation.
Stakeholders expect the professor’s involvement to strengthen collaborative projects between Indian forest agencies, NGOs and international bodies, potentially leading to more effective protection measures for native bear species such as the Himalayan black bear and sloth bear.
