Coal India Limited (CIL) and Hindustan Urja Ltd (HURL) have announced a joint feasibility study to set up a syngas‑derived urea manufacturing unit in Jharkhand.
Coal India Limited (CIL) and Hindustan Urja Ltd (HURL) said they will jointly assess the viability of a urea plant that uses synthesis gas (syngas) as feedstock in the state of Jharkhand. The two public‑sector enterprises plan to conduct a detailed feasibility study covering technology selection, capital investment, and environmental clearances.
The proposed facility aims to convert coal‑derived syngas into ammonia and subsequently into urea, potentially lowering production costs and reducing dependence on imported natural gas.
If the study yields positive results, CIL and HURL expect to move to the detailed engineering stage within the next year, with an eye on commissioning the plant by the mid‑2020s. The project aligns with the government’s push for domestic fertilizer production and broader utilization of coal resources for value‑added chemicals.
Stakeholders anticipate that the plant could create jobs in the region and contribute to the agricultural sector by ensuring a stable supply of urea fertilizer at competitive prices.
