Beijing continues to label parts of Arunachal Pradesh as ‘Zangnan’, a move India rejects as illegal and a breach of its sovereignty.

New Delhi has reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh remains an inseparable part of India’s sovereign territory, despite recent Chinese references to the region as “Zangnan.” The terminology, viewed by Indian officials as an attempt to legitise an illegal claim, has been dismissed as baseless and contrary to international law.

India’s defence establishment has warned that any unilateral renaming or administrative action by Beijing does not alter the legal status of the border. The Indian government maintains that the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the eastern sector is clearly demarcated, and any encroachment will be met with diplomatic and strategic responses.

Analysts note that the rhetoric reflects a broader pattern of Chinese assertiveness along its frontier, but the Indian stance remains firm: the sovereignty of Arunachal Pradesh will not be compromised, and any attempts to rewrite maps will be countered through established defence and diplomatic channels.
