The Governor of Chhattisgarh has signed a new Freedom of Religion Bill that imposes stringent penalties on illegal conversions, aiming to curb forced religious changes.

The Governor of Chhattisgarh signed the Freedom of Religion Bill on Tuesday, turning the legislation into law.

The bill, passed by the state assembly earlier this month, imposes strict penalties on individuals who facilitate or participate in illegal conversions. According to the draft, offenders could face up to five years of imprisonment and substantial fines.

The move comes amid growing concerns over forced conversions in the state and is expected to be enforced from the end of the month. Lawmakers say the law will protect religious freedom while preventing coercion.
