The Indian government has sanctioned an additional 5,000 postgraduate medical seats across the country, to be added by the academic year 2028-29.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced that the central government has approved the addition of 5,000 postgraduate medical seats across India, to be implemented by the 2028-29 academic year.

The move is part of a broader strategy to expand medical education capacity and address the growing demand for specialist doctors. The new seats will be distributed among existing medical colleges and will be subject to the usual accreditation and faculty requirements.

Health experts say the increase will help reduce the backlog of medical students awaiting admission and improve the overall quality of healthcare training in the country.

The decision follows consultations with state governments and medical education bodies, and the government has indicated that the expansion will be phased to ensure adequate infrastructure and faculty support.
